Vimshottari means "120" in Sanskrit, referring to the total cycle length of 120 years. The system divides a person's life into 9 planetary periods, each ruled by one of the Navagraha (nine Vedic planets). Aapka Starting Dasha Kaise Calculate Hota Hai

At the moment you were born, the Moon occupied one of the 27 nakshatras. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet. Ashwini is ruled by Ketu. Bharani by Venus. Krittika by Sun. And so on. The ruling planet of your birth nakshatra determines which Mahadasha you start in. But you don't start at the beginning of that Mahadasha. The Moon's exact degree within the nakshatra determines how much of that first period remains. If the Moon was halfway through Ashwini at your birth, you start with roughly half of Ketu's 7-year period remaining. This is why birth time accuracy matters so much.
