Western vs Vedic: Two Lenses, One Sky

Most astrology sites give you one system. Wishastro gives you both because the overlap is where the most useful insights live.

Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac, tied to the constellations. They measure the same planets against different reference points. Neither is wrong. Your Western Birth Chart reveals personality patterns through a psychological lens. Your Vedic Kundli reveals life timing through the Dasha system. The Compatibility Checker runs Western synastry and Vedic Ashtakoot side by side precisely because they catch different things.

Understanding Birth Data Requirements

Why some tools ask for your birth time and others do not.

Your Sun sign changes once a month. Your Moon sign changes every 2.25 days. Your Rising sign changes every 2 hours. The more precise the astrological point, the more precise your input needs to be. Tools that only need your Sun sign (like the Sun Sign Calculator or Zodiac Quiz) work with just your birth date. Tools that calculate your complete chart (like Birth Chart, Kundli, or Dasha Calculator) need your time and location because your house placements, rising sign, and Nakshatra depend on them.

If you do not know your birth time, check your birth certificate, hospital records, or ask family members. Even an approximate time (morning vs. evening) is better than none. Some Vedic astrologers offer birth time rectification if you have life event dates but no recorded time. 7 of our 18 tools work without any birth time at all.

·

The Calculation Systems Behind the Tools

What powers each tool and why the results are trustworthy.

Western tools use the Tropical zodiac with your choice of house system (Placidus is default, but we offer 7 options). Vedic tools use the Sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Indian government. Planetary positions are calculated from Swiss Ephemeris data, the same source used by professional astrology software worldwide.

Numerology tools use the Pythagorean letter-number system with Vedic planet mapping (Ank Jyotish). The Love Calculator layers in the Graha Maitri planetary friendship chart from Vedic tradition. Tarot cards are mapped to astrological correspondences following the Golden Dawn tradition, with additional Navagraha assignments for Vedic practitioners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Birth Chart and Kundli?
They both map your planetary positions at birth, but they use different zodiac systems. The Birth Chart uses the Western Tropical zodiac (tied to equinoxes), while the Kundli uses the Vedic Sidereal zodiac (tied to constellations). Because of a 24-degree gap called the Ayanamsa, your Vedic sign is typically one sign back from your Western sign. The Kundli also includes Vimshottari Dasha periods, Yogas, and Nakshatra analysis that the Western chart does not cover. We recommend running both for the fullest picture.
Why do some tools need my birth time?
Your ascendant (rising sign) changes roughly every 2 hours, and the Moon changes signs every 2.25 days. Without an accurate birth time, your house placements, rising sign, and Moon Nakshatra could be wrong. Tools like the Sun Sign Calculator and Zodiac Quiz work without birth time because they rely on slower-moving factors. But for a Birth Chart, Kundli, or Dasha Calculator, birth time is critical.
Which tool should I start with if I am new to astrology?
The Zodiac Quiz is the easiest starting point because it requires no birth data at all. If you know your birth date, try the Sun Sign Calculator next. Once you have your birth time, generate your Birth Chart (Western) or Kundli (Vedic) for the complete picture.
What is the difference between Compatibility Checker and Kundli Matching?
The Compatibility Checker runs both Western synastry and Vedic Ashtakoot Milan. It works for any relationship type. Kundli Matching is specifically for marriage compatibility using the traditional 36-point Ashtakoot system, with Mangal Dosha checks, Bhakoot dosha analysis, and cancellation condition evaluation. For marriage, use Kundli Matching. For general relationships, use the Compatibility Checker.
Are these tools really free? What is the catch?
There is no catch. All 18 tools are free with no signup required. There is no premium tier that hides the good results behind a paywall. The calculations and interpretations are the same for everyone. We built them because quality astrology tools should be accessible to everyone, not locked behind subscription walls.
How accurate are these calculators?
Planetary position calculations use Swiss Ephemeris data, the same source used by professional astrology software worldwide. Vedic calculations use Lahiri Ayanamsa, the standard recognized by the Indian government. The interpretive layer draws from classical texts (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra for Vedic, Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos for Western) and established astrological traditions. Your results are only as accurate as your birth data.
Can I use Vedic tools if I only know Western astrology?
Each Vedic tool includes explanations of key concepts, and we bridge Western equivalents wherever possible. If you know your Western sun sign, you can find your Vedic Rashi with the Rashi Calculator and discover a second astrological identity. The Nakshatra system adds a precision layer (27 divisions vs. 12 signs) that Western astrology does not have.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
You can still use 7 of our 18 tools without any birth time: Zodiac Quiz, Sun Sign Calculator, Numerology Calculator, Love Calculator, Tarot Reading, Palm Reading, and (with reduced accuracy) the Horoscope Generator. For birth time, check your birth certificate, hospital records, or ask family members.
