Every draw pulls from all 78 cards, 22 Major Arcana and four Minor suits in the Rider-Waite-Smith structure, and the card that came up is what you read.

4. Upright and reversed

Every card is drawn with an orientation, and the orientation is named on the card and carried in its artwork. Upright carries the plain reading. Reversed is read in tradition as the same energy blocked, turned inward or slowed, not as the opposite, and our own card meanings give it its own reading.

5. Positions that frame the question

Each slot is named and explained: Past, Present, Future, or the ten Celtic Cross positions. A card carries the same meaning wherever it lands, and the position tells you which part of your question that meaning is answering.

6. A straight yes or no

The Yes / No reading returns one card and one answer, and names the card the answer came from, so you can see what it was read off rather than just the verdict.

Major Arcana
The 22 trump cards, The Fool through The World, standing for the large themes of a life. These are the cards that carry a graha.
Minor Arcana
The 56 suit cards, covering everyday situations across four elemental suits.
Spread
A layout where each position carries a fixed question, such as past, present or outcome.
Ulta
A card drawn upside down. Read as blocked, inward-turned or slowed energy, not as the opposite.
Court Cards
Page, Knight, Queen and King in each suit. Often read as people or as sides of a personality.
Celtic Cross

A card drawn the right way up. Carries the plain, outward reading.
Arcana
Latin for secrets. The deck splits into the greater and lesser mysteries.
Navagraha
The nine planets of Jyotish: Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu. The Major Arcana meet them through shared planetary assignments.
Rashi
A zodiac sign in Jyotish. Cards assigned to a sign rather than a planet map to their rashi.

Every Major Arcana card has carried a planet or a zodiac sign since the correspondence system was built, and most of those planets have direct counterparts in the Navagraha, the nine planets of Jyotish. When you draw one of the 22, that correspondence is looked up from the chart published on this page and shown beside the card: a graha on 7 of the rows, a rashi on 12, and a marked row on the 3 that carry modern outer planets the classical Navagraha does not contain.

A reading here draws from the full 78 card deck and reads each card by its traditional meaning, then names the position you laid it in. Eleven of the thirteen readings have their own purpose-built reading engine behind them, which is why a Career read and a Love read are not the same paragraph under two headings. Nothing is pre-selected, and the same reading can return different cards another day.

What the orientation is

Every card is dealt upright or reversed, the orientation is named on the card, and the artwork you see is the plate for the way it landed. Our own card meanings carry a separate upright and a separate reversed reading, and the Yes / No verdict and the Career read are drawn for the orientation as well. On the other themed readings the text that comes back is the same whichever way up the card landed, so there the orientation is named and read as the traditional reversal line rather than as different text. This page claims no more than that.

What the Vedic layer is

Every Major Arcana card carries a fixed correspondence: a planet or zodiac sign, an element, and the graha or rashi counterpart on the 19 of the 22 where the classical system gives one. When you draw one of the 22, that correspondence is looked up from the chart published on this page and shown beside the card. That chart is our own editorial mapping, built by us from the classical correspondence system and the Navagraha, and published here in full so you can check it. It does not come from the card provider, and no card provider supplies it. It is a lookup, not a calculation, and it is the same for every reader who draws the same card. Three of the 22 carry modern planets with no Navagraha counterpart, and those are marked rather than paired.

What the position does

A position tells you which part of your question a card is answering. A card's meaning is the same wherever it lands, and this page does not claim otherwise.
