Janma Rashi is your birth Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. The zodiac is cut into 12 arcs of 30 degrees each, fixed against the stars, and your Rashi is whichever arc the Moon was crossing at the moment you were born. Because the Moon moves fast, roughly 2.25 days per sign, your Rashi is far more specific to your birth than a Sun sign is. It is also the most-used single placement in Vedic astrology: daily horoscopes are keyed to it, marriage matching starts from it, naming ceremonies pick the first syllable from the nakshatra inside it, Saturn’s Sade Sati is counted from it, and religious observances are timed from it. Rashi ya Rasi: ek rashi, do vartaniyan
You will see both. “Rashi” follows the North Indian and Hindi transliteration, “rasi” follows the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada one, and they are the same word for the same twelve signs. A rasi calculator and a rashi calculator do identical arithmetic. The names of the signs shift a little too: Mesha is also written Mesham, Vrishabha as Rishabam, Karka as Kadagam. Nirayan aur Sayan: aapki Rashi Western Moon sign kyun nahin hai
Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the March equinox, so 0 degrees Aries is defined as wherever the equinox falls. Vedic astrology anchors its zodiac to the fixed stars instead. Because the Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, the equinox point slides backwards against the stars by about a degree every 72 years, and over the last two thousand years the two zodiacs have pulled roughly 24 degrees apart. That gap is the ayanamsa, and the value used here is Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the one Indian government calendars and most Jyotish software work from. The practical result is simple: unless the Moon happened to be in the last few degrees of a sign, your Vedic Rashi is one sign behind your Western Moon sign. Neither system is wrong about the sky. They are measuring from different starting lines.
One thing worth separating out, because it causes constant confusion: the English name we print beside your Rashi, Taurus for Vrishabha or Capricorn for Makara, is a translation of the same sidereal sign into English. It is not your tropical Moon sign, and it will never differ from your Rashi, because it is your Rashi. The one-sign gap described here is between two different zodiacs, not between two names for the same one.

Every Rashi is owned by a planet, called the adhipati or Rashi Lord. Rashi Sandhi: seema ke paas janm, aur hum use kaise darshate hain
Rashi Sandhi is the junction where one Rashi ends and the next begins. If the Moon was within about a degree of that line when you were born, a twenty-minute error in your recorded birth time is enough to move you into the neighbouring sign. This does not make a chart invalid, and it is more common than people expect, since the Moon crosses a boundary every couple of days. Gandanta, the junction between a water sign and the fire sign that follows it, is treated as the most sensitive of these points in classical texts.

In a traditional namakarana, the naming ceremony held in the first weeks after a birth, the family astrologer gives the parents a syllable and the name is built from it. The syllable is not chosen freely: each of the 108 nakshatra padas has one assigned to it, so the Moon’s exact position decides the sound. Rohini pada 4 gives one letter, Ashlesha pada 2 another. Sade Sati: aapki rashi par Shani ke saade saat saal
Sade Sati, literally “seven and a half”, is the stretch when Saturn transits three signs in a row: the one before your Janma Rashi, your Rashi itself, and the one after it. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign, so the full passage runs roughly seven and a half years, and it comes around about every 30 years. Because it is measured from the Moon sign and nothing else, this page can tell you your current status straight from your Rashi, and it can date the phases as well.
Classical practice divides the passage into three phases. The first, while Saturn crosses the sign before your Rashi, is described as the rising phase and is traditionally associated with the ground shifting under settled arrangements. The second, with Saturn on your Rashi itself, is the peak, read as the most demanding of the three. The third, with Saturn in the sign after, is the setting phase, associated with consolidation and with the results of the previous five years becoming visible. Your result names which of the three you are in if you are in one, and prints the start and end dates of your past, current and coming phases, computed from Saturn’s real motion rather than from a fixed calendar, which is why a boundary can move a little when Saturn turns retrograde.
Two things are worth saying plainly. Sade Sati is a transit window, not a prediction: tradition frames it as a slow, work-heavy period that tends to reward patience and steady effort, and Saturn is read as a strict teacher rather than a punisher. A date on this page marks when a window opens and closes and says nothing about what will happen inside it. And it is not an instruction. Nothing about this period tells you to postpone a wedding, a house, a job move or a medical appointment, and any page that says otherwise has left astrology behind. Rashi aur daily rashifal
A rashifal is not a translated Western horoscope. It is written for the 12 rashis and it tracks the Moon’s transit counted from your Janma Rashi, so it moves on a different clock from a Sun-sign column and it is read by a different audience for different things. This is also the single most common reason a daily horoscope feels wrong to Indian readers: they have been reading the column for their Western Sun sign, which in Vedic terms is neither their Sun sign nor their Rashi. Once you know your Janma Rashi, the rashifal you read is at least the one written for you.
Vivah milan mein Rashi
Rashi is the first input into Ashtakoot Milan, the eight-factor system most Indian families use when they compare two charts. Two of the eight factors come straight from it: Bhakoot, worth 7 of 36 points, is scored from the positions of the two rashis relative to each other, and Graha Maitri, worth 5, asks whether the two Rashi Lords are traditionally friends. Together that is 12 of 36 points decided before anything else is examined, and the gana, yoni and nadi attributes this page returns account for a further 14. Certain rashi pairs, the 2 and 12 or the 6 and 8 relationships, are read as Bhakoot Dosha, and classical practice also lists conditions under which it is considered cancelled. A matching score is one reading among several, astrologers weigh the whole chart rather than a single factor, and the decision belongs to the people involved.
