Birendra Mahto was born and raised in Ranchi, Jharkhand, in a household where almanacs were as common as cookbooks. His grandfather, a village jyotishi trained in the Parashari tradition of Bihar, introduced him to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra before he could read a newspaper properly. Birendra later studied formally under a senior teacher at the Kashi Vidyapeeth lineage circle in Varanasi, deepening his grounding in classical north Indian chart interpretation over nearly a decade before returning home to practice full-time.
