Vedic Astrology

Jyotish, the "science of light," is India's ancient system of astrology dating back over 5,000 years. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac and incorporates unique systems like Nakshatras, Dashas, and Doshas that Western astrology does not have.

The 9 Grahas (Navagraha)

Vedic astrology uses 9 celestial bodies. No Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto. Instead, Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes) carry karmic weight that outer planets do not.

Western astrology added Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846), and Pluto (1930) as they were discovered. Vedic astrology never adopted them. Instead, the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu serve as karmic indicators: Rahu represents worldly desires and obsessions, Ketu represents detachment and past-life patterns. Together they define the karmic axis of your chart. Every Graha has a Beej Mantra, a fasting day, a gemstone, and a presiding deity for remedial purposes.

Sidereal vs Tropical: Why Your Vedic Sign Differs

The ~24-degree gap that means your Vedic sign is usually one sign back from your Western sign.

Western astrology fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox. Vedic astrology fixes it to the actual constellation of Aries. Because Earth's axis wobbles (precession), these two reference points drift apart by about 1 degree every 72 years. The current gap, called the Ayanamsa, is roughly 24 degrees. So if your Western sun sign is Taurus at 5°, your Vedic sun sign is likely still Aries (Mesh) in the sidereal system.

The 12 Bhavas (Houses)

Each Bhava governs a domain of life. Your Lagna (ascendant) sets the first house, and the rest follow in order.

BhavaSanskrit NameCategoryGovernsNatural Karaka
1stTanuKendraSelf, body, personalitySun
2ndDhanaMarakaWealth, speech, familyJupiter

Houses are categorized by function: Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are pillars of strength. Trikonas (1, 5, 9) are houses of fortune. Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) bring challenges that build resilience. Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with age. A planet ruling both a Kendra and a Trikona becomes a Raja Yoga Karaka, the chart's most beneficial planet. Understanding Doshas

A Dosha is not a curse. It is a specific planetary pattern that creates challenges in particular areas. Most have known cancellation conditions.

DoshaCaused ByAffectsDurationCancellation?
Mangal DoshaMars in 1/2/4/7/8/12Marriage, partnershipsLifetime (lessens after 28)Yes, 12+ conditions
Kaal SarpAll planets between Rahu-KetuAll life areasUntil axis shiftsPartial

Pitra DoshaSun conjunct Rahu/KetuAncestral karmaLifetimeVia Pind Daan ritual
Shani DoshaAfflicted SaturnCareer, disciplineSaturn period/transitVia Shani remedies

The Dosha Scanner checks all five in a single report. It also runs cancellation condition checks, which most single-dosha calculators skip. Severity is scored on a scale (Mild, Moderate, Severe) rather than a simple yes or no.

The Vedic Remedy System

Gemstones, mantras, fasting, deity worship, and charity. Five categories of remedies tied to the Navagraha.

Vedic astrology does not just diagnose. It prescribes. Each Graha has a set of remedies that can strengthen a weak planet or pacify a malefic one. Gemstones channel planetary energy through skin contact. Beej Mantras are seed syllables recited in specific counts (usually 108). Fasting on the Graha's day reduces its negative effects. Deity worship connects you to the Graha's presiding god. Charity on the correct day and with the correct items redirects karmic energy.

*Blue Sapphire (Neelam) requires a 7-day trial wear period. It is the most reactive gemstone in Vedic tradition. If it causes disturbed sleep, accidents, or emotional disturbance during the trial, remove it immediately and do not wear it permanently.

Classical Texts and Lineage

Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of the Vedas. Its foundational texts are still used by practitioners today.

The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (attributed to Sage Parashara) is the primary reference for chart interpretation, Dasha systems, and Yogas. The Jataka Parijata and Phaladeepika extend Parashara's framework with detailed planetary dignity rules. Brihat Jataka by Varahamihira (6th century CE) bridges observational astronomy with predictive astrology. These are not relics. Modern Vedic astrologers still reference exact verses from these texts when interpreting charts. The mathematical foundation comes from the Surya Siddhanta, one of the oldest astronomical treatises, which provides the calculations for planetary positions that Swiss Ephemeris data has since confirmed with modern precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac (tied to equinoxes). Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac (tied to constellations). The ~24-degree gap means your Vedic sign is often one sign back from your Western sign. Vedic also uses the Nakshatra system (27 lunar mansions), the Vimshottari Dasha timing system, and a remedy framework (gemstones, mantras, fasting) that Western astrology does not have.
Why is the Moon more important than the Sun in Vedic astrology?
Your Janma Rashi (birth moon sign) determines your emotional nature, your starting Dasha period, and your Nakshatra. In Vedic tradition, the Moon represents Manas (mind) and is the fastest-moving visible Graha, changing signs every 2.25 days. Daily horoscopes (Rashifal) in India are based on Moon sign, not Sun sign. Your Moon sign is your Vedic identity.
What is a Nakshatra and why does it matter?
A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, each spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes of the zodiac. While the 12 Rashis give broad personality types, Nakshatras add precision: each has a ruling deity, a Yoni (animal instinct), a Gana (temperament), and 4 Padas (sub-divisions). Your Janma Nakshatra determines your starting Vimshottari Dasha period and the first syllable of your Vedic name.
What is Mangal Dosha and should I be worried?
Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from Lagna, Moon, or Venus. It can create friction in marriage. But over 12 known cancellation conditions exist (e.g., Mars in its own sign, Jupiter aspecting Mars, both partners being Manglik). The effect also diminishes after age 28.
How does the Vimshottari Dasha system work?
The Vimshottari system divides life into 120 years, ruled by 9 Grahas in sequence: Ketu (7 years), Shukra (20), Surya (6), Chandra (10), Mangal (7), Rahu (18), Guru (16), Shani (19), Budha (17). Your starting Dasha is determined by your birth Nakshatra. Within each Mahadasha are 9 Antardasha sub-periods.
What is Kundli Matching and how does it work?
Kundli Matching uses the Ashtakoot Milan system to score compatibility between two people across 8 categories (Kootas) for a total of 36 points. A score of 18+ is considered favorable for marriage. The 8 Kootas are: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), and Nadi (8).
Do I need my exact birth time for Vedic astrology?
For a complete Kundli, yes. Your Lagna (ascendant) changes roughly every 2 hours, and your Moon Nakshatra Pada can shift with even a 15-minute difference. If you know your approximate time, you can still get useful results. For tools that only need Moon sign (like the Rashi Calculator), birth date alone works if the Moon did not change signs that day.
Can I use Vedic astrology if I only know Western astrology?
Yes. Every Vedic tool on Wishastro includes explanations of key concepts and bridges to Western equivalents. If you know your Western sun sign, the Rashi Calculator will show you your Vedic identity. The Nakshatra system adds precision (27 divisions vs. 12 signs) and the Dasha system adds timing predictions that Western astrology does not have.
