Vedic Astrology
Jyotish, the "science of light," is India's ancient system of astrology dating back over 5,000 years. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac and incorporates unique systems like Nakshatras, Dashas, and Doshas that Western astrology does not have.
Core Concepts of Jyotish
The four pillars of Vedic astrology. Each one offers a layer of insight that Western astrology does not cover.
Rashi (Vedic Signs)
The 12 sidereal zodiac signs. Each Rashi is ruled by a Graha and contains 2-3 Nakshatras. Your Janma Rashi (moon sign) is more important than your sun sign in Vedic tradition.
Nakshatras
27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into 13°20′ arcs. Each has a ruling deity, Yoni animal, Gana temperament, and 4 Padas. The precision layer that Western astrology lacks entirely.
Doshas
Challenging planetary combinations: Mangal Dosha (Mars), Kaal Sarp Dosha (Rahu-Ketu axis), Sade Sati (Saturn’s 7.5-year transit), Pitra Dosha, and Shani Dosha. Most have specific cancellation conditions.
Dashas
The Vimshottari Dasha system divides life into 120 years of planetary periods. Each Mahadasha is ruled by a planet and shapes the themes of that life phase. The Vedic answer to “when.”

The 9 Grahas (Navagraha)
Vedic astrology uses 9 celestial bodies. No Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto. Instead, Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes) carry karmic weight that outer planets do not.
| Graha | Western Name | Rules | Exalted In | Debilitated In | Gemstone | Day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surya | Sun | Simha | Mesh (10°) | Tula | Ruby | Sunday |
| Chandra | Moon | Karka | Vrishabha (3°) | Vrishchika | Pearl | Monday |
| Mangal | Mars | Mesh, Vrishchika | Makar (28°) | Karka | Red Coral | Tuesday |
| Budha | Mercury | Mithuna, Kanya | Kanya (15°) | Meena | Emerald | Wednesday |
| Guru | Jupiter | Dhanu, Meena | Karka (5°) | Makar | Yellow Sapphire | Thursday |
| Shukra | Venus | Vrishabha, Tula | Meena (27°) | Kanya | Diamond | Friday |
| Shani | Saturn | Makar, Kumbha | Tula (20°) | Mesh | Blue Sapphire | Saturday |
| Rahu | N. Node | Shadow | Vrishabha | Vrishchika | Hessonite | Saturday |
| Ketu | S. Node | Shadow | Vrishchika | Vrishabha | Cat’s Eye | Tuesday |
Western astrology added Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846), and Pluto (1930) as they were discovered. Vedic astrology never adopted them. Instead, the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu serve as karmic indicators: Rahu represents worldly desires and obsessions, Ketu represents detachment and past-life patterns. Together they define the karmic axis of your chart. Every Graha has a Beej Mantra, a fasting day, a gemstone, and a presiding deity for remedial purposes.
All 27 Nakshatras
The lunar mansions that give Vedic astrology its precision. Each spans 13°20' and has 4 Padas. Your Janma Nakshatra determines your Vimshottari Dasha starting period.
Sidereal vs Tropical: Why Your Vedic Sign Differs
The ~24-degree gap that means your Vedic sign is usually one sign back from your Western sign.
Western astrology fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox. Vedic astrology fixes it to the actual constellation of Aries. Because Earth's axis wobbles (precession), these two reference points drift apart by about 1 degree every 72 years. The current gap, called the Ayanamsa, is roughly 24 degrees. So if your Western sun sign is Taurus at 5°, your Vedic sun sign is likely still Aries (Mesh) in the sidereal system.
| Dimension | Western (Tropical) | Vedic (Sidereal) |
|---|---|---|
| Reference Point | Spring equinox (0° Aries) | Fixed star Spica (Chitra) |
| Primary Luminary | Sun sign | Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) |
| Subdivisions | Decanates (3 per sign) | Nakshatras (27 total, 4 Padas each) |
| Timing | Transits and progressions | Vimshottari Dasha (120-year cycle) |
| Compatibility | Synastry (aspect overlay) | Ashtakoot Milan (36-point system) |
| Remedies | Self-awareness | Gemstones, mantras, fasting, worship |
| Ayanamsa Standard | N/A | Lahiri (Indian govt standard) |
| Source Text | Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos | Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra |
Neither system is wrong. They are measuring the same sky against different reference frames. Wishastro gives you both because the overlap is where the most useful insights live. Use the Rashi Calculator to find your sidereal sign and compare it to your Western sun sign.
The 12 Bhavas (Houses)
Each Bhava governs a domain of life. Your Lagna (ascendant) sets the first house, and the rest follow in order.
| Bhava | Sanskrit Name | Category | Governs | Natural Karaka |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Tanu | Kendra | Self, body, personality | Sun |
| 2nd | Dhana | Maraka | Wealth, speech, family | Jupiter |
| 3rd | Sahaja | Upachaya | Siblings, courage, effort | Mars |
| 4th | Sukha | Kendra | Mother, home, emotions | Moon |
| 5th | Putra | Trikona | Children, creativity, past merit | Jupiter |
| 6th | Ripu | Dusthana | Enemies, disease, debt | Mars, Saturn |
| 7th | Kalatra | Kendra | Marriage, partnerships | Venus |
| 8th | Ayu | Dusthana | Longevity, transformation | Saturn |
| 9th | Dharma | Trikona | Father, fortune, higher learning | Jupiter |
| 10th | Karma | Kendra | Career, reputation, public life | Sun, Mercury |
| 11th | Labha | Upachaya | Gains, friends, wishes | Jupiter |
| 12th | Vyaya | Dusthana | Loss, foreign lands, moksha | Saturn, Ketu |
Houses are categorized by function: Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are pillars of strength. Trikonas (1, 5, 9) are houses of fortune. Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) bring challenges that build resilience. Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with age. A planet ruling both a Kendra and a Trikona becomes a Raja Yoga Karaka, the chart's most beneficial planet. Use the Lagna Chart Calculator to see your complete Bhava layout.
Understanding Doshas
A Dosha is not a curse. It is a specific planetary pattern that creates challenges in particular areas. Most have known cancellation conditions.
| Dosha | Caused By | Affects | Duration | Cancellation? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mangal Dosha | Mars in 1/2/4/7/8/12 | Marriage, partnerships | Lifetime (lessens after 28) | Yes, 12+ conditions |
| Kaal Sarp | All planets between Rahu-Ketu | All life areas | Until axis shifts | Partial |
| Sade Sati | Saturn transiting Moon ±1 sign | Emotional, career | 7.5 years | No (but phases vary) |
| Pitra Dosha | Sun conjunct Rahu/Ketu | Ancestral karma | Lifetime | Via Pind Daan ritual |
| Shani Dosha | Afflicted Saturn | Career, discipline | Saturn period/transit | Via Shani remedies |
The Dosha Scanner checks all five in a single report. It also runs cancellation condition checks, which most single-dosha calculators skip. Severity is scored on a scale (Mild, Moderate, Severe) rather than a simple yes or no.
The Vedic Remedy System
Gemstones, mantras, fasting, deity worship, and charity. Five categories of remedies tied to the Navagraha.
Vedic astrology does not just diagnose. It prescribes. Each Graha has a set of remedies that can strengthen a weak planet or pacify a malefic one. Gemstones channel planetary energy through skin contact. Beej Mantras are seed syllables recited in specific counts (usually 108). Fasting on the Graha's day reduces its negative effects. Deity worship connects you to the Graha's presiding god. Charity on the correct day and with the correct items redirects karmic energy.
| Graha | Gemstone | Beej Mantra | Fasting Day | Deity | Charity Items |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surya | Ruby (Manik) | Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah | Sunday | Surya Dev | Wheat, jaggery, red cloth |
| Chandra | Pearl (Moti) | Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah | Monday | Shiva / Parvati | Rice, white cloth, milk |
| Mangal | Red Coral (Moonga) | Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah | Tuesday | Hanuman / Kartikeya | Red lentils, copper |
| Budha | Emerald (Panna) | Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah | Wednesday | Vishnu | Green moong, green cloth |
| Guru | Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) | Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah | Thursday | Vishnu / Brihaspati | Turmeric, books, saffron |
| Shukra | Diamond (Heera) | Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah | Friday | Lakshmi | White items, ghee, silk |
| Shani | Blue Sapphire (Neelam)* | Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaye Namah | Saturday | Hanuman / Shani Dev | Black sesame, iron, oil |
| Rahu | Hessonite (Gomed) | Om Bhram Bhrim Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah | Saturday | Durga | Black cloth, mustard oil |
| Ketu | Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia) | Om Straam Streem Straum Sah Ketave Namah | Tuesday | Ganesha | Blankets, sesame seeds |
*Blue Sapphire (Neelam) requires a 7-day trial wear period. It is the most reactive gemstone in Vedic tradition. If it causes disturbed sleep, accidents, or emotional disturbance during the trial, remove it immediately and do not wear it permanently.
Classical Texts and Lineage
Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of the Vedas. Its foundational texts are still used by practitioners today.
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (attributed to Sage Parashara) is the primary reference for chart interpretation, Dasha systems, and Yogas. The Jataka Parijata and Phaladeepika extend Parashara's framework with detailed planetary dignity rules. Brihat Jataka by Varahamihira (6th century CE) bridges observational astronomy with predictive astrology. These are not relics. Modern Vedic astrologers still reference exact verses from these texts when interpreting charts. The mathematical foundation comes from the Surya Siddhanta, one of the oldest astronomical treatises, which provides the calculations for planetary positions that Swiss Ephemeris data has since confirmed with modern precision.
