The 8 Kootas of Ashtakoota
Each koota measures a different dimension of marriage compatibility
Varna (1 Point)
Spiritual compatibility and ego balance. Classifies individuals as Brahmin (scholar), Kshatriya (warrior), Vaishya (merchant), or Shudra (worker). Full point awarded when the boy’s Varna is equal or higher.
Vashya (2 Points)
Mutual attraction and influence in the relationship. Categorizes people into 5 types: Manav, Vanchar, Chatushpad, Jalchar, Keeta. Determines who has natural dominance.
Tara (3 Points)
Birth star (Nakshatra) compatibility assessing health, destiny, and longevity of the relationship. Calculated by counting nakshatras from boy’s to girl’s star and dividing by 9.
Yoni (4 Points)
Sexual and physical compatibility. Each nakshatra maps to one of 14 animal types. Same animal = full 4 points. Enemy animals = 0 points. Critical for physical harmony.
Graha Maitri (5 Points)
Mental compatibility and friendship. Compares the ruling planets (lords) of each partner’s Moon sign. If both lords are friends, 5 points. Enemy lords get 0.
Gana (6 Points)
Temperament and behavioral compatibility. Three types: Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced), Rakshasa (assertive). Same gana = full 6 points. Deva-Rakshasa = 0 (Gana Dosha).
Bhakoot (7 Points)
Emotional bonding, love, and financial prosperity. Based on relative Moon sign positions. 6-8 and 2-12 combinations cause Bhakoot Dosha. Second most important koota.
Nadi (8 Points — Highest)
Health, genetics, and progeny compatibility. Three nadis: Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), Antya (Kapha). Same nadi = 0 points (Nadi Dosha, most serious). Carries the most weight.

Understanding Kundli Matching
Kundli matching (also called guna milan or horoscope matching) is a centuries-old Vedic tradition used to assess compatibility between two people before marriage. It compares the birth charts of both partners using a structured scoring system called Ashtakoot, which evaluates eight specific dimensions of compatibility.
How the Ashtakoota System Works
The Ashtakoota system compares the Moon's position in both charts across 8 parameters (kootas), assigning points that total 36. The Moon is used because Vedic astrology considers it the primary indicator of mind and emotions, making it central to relationship compatibility. Each koota has a different weight reflecting its relative importance: Nadi (health, 8 points) carries the most, while Varna (spiritual, 1 point) carries the least.
What Your Score Means
A minimum of 18 out of 36 is traditionally considered the threshold for an acceptable match. Scores of 21–30 indicate very good compatibility. Scores above 30 are excellent and rare. However, the total number alone is misleading. A couple scoring 28 with full Nadi (8), Bhakoot (7), and Graha Maitri (5) has stronger real-world compatibility than a couple scoring 32 with Nadi Dosha (0/8). Focus on which kootas scored well, not just the total.
Can Kundli Matching Be Done for Love Marriages?
Yes. Kundli Matching works the same way regardless of whether the marriage is arranged or a love marriage. In fact, it can be especially useful for love marriages because couples who are emotionally invested benefit from understanding where their astrological compatibility is strong and where it may need extra attention. If doshas are found, remedies can be performed proactively.
What if the Score Is Low?
A low Gun Milan score does not automatically mean the marriage will fail. It means certain compatibility aspects need attention. Vedic astrology offers remedies for most doshas. Nadi Dosha remedies include Nadi Nivarana puja, donation of gold and grains, and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra chanting. Mangal Dosha remedies include Mangal Shanti puja and Kumbh Vivah (symbolic marriage to a pot or tree before the actual wedding). Most importantly, astrologers check for dosha cancellation conditions — many doshas get automatically cancelled by other favorable factors in the chart.
Dashakoota vs. Ashtakoota
While Ashtakoota (8 aspects) is the standard in North India, South Indian astrologers often use Dashakoota (10 aspects), which adds two more factors: Mahendra (family prosperity and longevity) and Rajju (marital bond durability). Some South Indian traditions also check Vedha (affliction) and Stree Deergha (woman's longevity). Our tool currently uses the widely accepted Ashtakoota method.
Beyond the Score: Complete Chart Analysis
Experienced astrologers look at several factors that Gun Milan alone cannot capture. The 7th house rules marriage in both charts — its sign, planets, and aspects reveal the nature of married life. Venus represents love, romance, and marital happiness. Jupiter represents wisdom, children, and dharma. Their strength and placement in both charts markedly impact married life quality. If both partners are running favorable dashas at the time of marriage, the union starts on strong footing.
