The Five Limbs of Panchang
Each day's panchang consists of five essential elements
Lunar day (30 per month). Determines the auspiciousness of activities and rituals.
Moon's position among 27 lunar mansions. Critical for muhurat selection.
Sun-Moon angular distance. 27 yogas with different qualities and effects.
Half of a tithi. 11 types governing short-term activities and timing.
Weekday ruled by a specific planet. Influences daily activities.
Understanding the Panchang
The word "Panchang" comes from Sanskrit: "Panch" (five) + "Ang" (limb). It is the Vedic system for tracking time based on the positions of the Sun and Moon. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Panchang accounts for the subtle celestial influences that traditional Hindu astrology considers essential for determining auspicious and inauspicious periods.
Why Location Matters
Panchang timings are calculated based on local sunrise and sunset. A tithi that starts at 5:30 AM in Mumbai may start at a different time in Delhi. Rahu Kalam, Gulika Kalam, and other inauspicious periods shift based on the day of the week and the local sunrise time. Always check the panchang for your specific city.
Practical Uses
Hindus consult the panchang for scheduling weddings (muhurat), starting new businesses, house warming ceremonies (griha pravesh), naming ceremonies (namkaran), and daily rituals. The panchang tells you which time windows are favorable and which to avoid.
