How Astrology Works
Astrology is the study of how the positions of celestial bodies at the time and place of your birth influence your personality, relationships, and life events. Here's how it all fits together.
The Birth Chart
Your birth chart (also called a natal chart or horoscope) is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It shows where each planet was positioned relative to the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses. Think of it as your cosmic fingerprint — unique to you.
The 12 Zodiac Signs
The zodiac is a belt of 12 constellations that the Sun appears to travel through over the course of a year. Each sign has distinct qualities. Your Sun sign (what most people call "their sign") represents your core identity, but your Moon sign, Rising sign, and other planetary placements add layers of complexity.
The Planets
In astrology, "planets" include the Sun and Moon along with Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the outer planets. Each planet governs different aspects of life — the Sun rules identity, the Moon rules emotions, Venus rules love, and so on.
The 12 Houses
The houses divide your chart into 12 sectors, each representing a life area: self, wealth, communication, home, creativity, health, partnerships, transformation, philosophy, career, community, and spirituality.
Vedic vs Western Astrology
Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac (based on the seasons), while Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the Sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions). This creates roughly a 24-degree difference. Vedic astrology also uses unique systems like Nakshatras (27 lunar mansions), Dashas (planetary periods), and Doshas (afflictions).
Aspects
Aspects are angular relationships between planets. When two planets form a conjunction (0°), trine (120°), or opposition (180°), they interact in meaningful ways — creating harmony, tension, or dynamic energy in your chart.
