Sun Sign Calculator: What's Your Zodiac Sign and Surya Rashi?

Enter your date of birth and this free sun sign calculator returns two signs, not one. The first is your Western sun sign, read on the tropical zodiac that every horoscope column uses. The second is your Surya Rashi, the Vedic sun sign read on the sidereal zodiac, computed on the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. They are usually different, and most people have never been told why. You also get the element, modality and ruling planet under both its Western and its Sanskrit name, the traditional lucky day, color, number and gemstone for your sign, and today's reading for it with today's lucky color and lucky number. No birth time, no birthplace. It takes about five seconds.

Your Western Sign·Your Surya Rashi·Element And Ruler·Today's Lucky Color

Enter Your Birth Date

Your date of birth is all this needs. No birth time, no birthplace.

The year is here because both sets of crossing days move. The Western crossing swings back and forth with the leap year cycle, and the Vedic Sankranti drifts steadily later, about a day and a half a century, because the sidereal reference point itself moves. With your year, each crossing is worked out for that year rather than read off an average.

No sign-up. Just your birth date.

What This Calculator Tells You

Twelve things your birth date gives you.

Your Western Sun Sign

The zodiac sign the Sun was travelling through on your birthday, measured on the tropical zodiac that Western astrology uses. This is the sign you already tell people, and the one every horoscope column means.

Your Surya Rashi

Your Vedic sun sign, computed on the sidereal zodiac rather than translated from the Western one. This is the solar sign an Indian astrologer is reading, and for most birthdays it is not the sign you grew up calling yours.

The Gap Between Them

How far apart the two frames sit for your date, and which sign that puts you in on each. The offset is about 24 degrees, a sign is 30, so the Vedic answer lands one sign earlier for most of every month. You get both answers and the reason, rather than being told one and left to argue about the other.

Both Date Ranges

The Western range your sign runs between and the Sankranti range your Surya Rashi runs between, both worked out for your birth year rather than read off a printed average, so you can see how close to either crossing you were born. Land on a crossing in either zodiac, or within about a day of one, and the calculator says so instead of guessing.

Element and Modality

Fire, Earth, Air or Water, paired with Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable. These two axes describe more about a sign's working style than the sign name does on its own.

Ruling Planet, Two Names

Your sign's ruling planet in Western astrology and the Sanskrit name Vedic astrology uses for the same planet. Mars is Mangal, Venus is Shukra, Jupiter is Guru. Same body, two vocabularies.

Today's Reading for Your Sign

A dated reading for your sign covering the traditional areas a daily rashifal walks through: energy and physique, standing, finances, relationships, career and travel, each with a rating and a line of its own. It refreshes every day, so the page is worth returning to.

Today's Lucky Color and Number

The color and the number carried for your sign today, shown with the actual color so you can see it rather than guess at the shade. These move day to day, which is what makes them different from the fixed traditional lucky items.

Your Traditional Lucky Items

The day, color, number and gemstone traditionally associated with your sign, plus the part of the body it is linked to in classical correspondence. These do not change: they belong to the sign, not to the date.

Strengths and Challenges

The qualities traditionally read for your sign, written both ways: what it is good at, and where it reliably gets in its own way. This is a description of the sign, not a reading of you.

Sun Sign Matches

The signs traditionally paired as best, good and challenging matches for yours. This is one layer only. For two real charts, the Compatibility Checker goes further.

Today's Reading for All Twelve Signs

Dated August 19, 2026. Pick your sign, or find it with the form.

Every sign gets its own reading for the day, refreshed each morning: how the energy sits, where the pressure is, what the traditional lucky color and number are. Two things worth being straight about. This reading is keyed to the sign, so everyone born under Simha gets the same one today, and it is not read from your individual chart. And it works from the sign, not from a date you enter, so you can read yours without submitting anything at all.

Understanding Your Sun Sign

What the Sun stands for, why two zodiacs disagree, and what this calculator does and does not settle.

What Your Sun Sign Actually Means

Your sun sign is the stretch of the ecliptic the Sun was crossing on the day you were born. In astrology the Sun stands for conscious identity, sense of purpose, and the version of yourself you are growing into over a lifetime. It is not a full personality description, and it was never meant to be one. It is closer to the main arc of the story than to the whole cast.

Someone who says “I am a Scorpio” is naming their Western sun sign. Their emotional reactions come from the Moon, their first impression on other people from the rising sign, their taste in love from Venus and their drive from Mars. This calculator reads the Sun, in two zodiacs, which is still one placement out of roughly a dozen a full chart tracks. If your sun sign has never quite fitted, that gap is usually where the answer is, and sometimes the answer is simply that you have been reading the wrong zodiac for your tradition.

Your Sun Sign by Date of Birth: Why the Time Does Not Matter

The Sun spends about a month in each sign and moves roughly one degree a day. That is slow enough that your date of birth settles both answers completely, except on the handful of days a year when the Sun actually crosses. Ask for your sun sign and you will be asked for your date of birth, nothing else. This is exactly why a sun sign calculator can work from three dropdowns while a moon sign or rising sign calculator cannot.

The Moon, by contrast, changes sign every two and a quarter days, and the rising sign changes every two hours, which is why those tools need your birth time and birthplace. The year is asked for here only because the sidereal frame drifts slowly against the calendar, so a Vedic crossing in 1960 sits a fraction of a day away from the same crossing today. If someone asks for your time and place to tell you your sun sign, they are calculating something else as well, or they are being careful about the crossing days.

Two Zodiacs, One Sun: Tropical, Sidereal and the Ayanamsa

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons: the first degree of Aries is the spring equinox, wherever the constellation of Aries happens to sit. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the constellations themselves. Because the Earth's axis wobbles slowly, a motion called precession, the two frames have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees over the last two thousand years. That gap has a name: the ayanamsa. Since a sign spans 30 degrees, the drift is large enough to move most birthdays back one sign in the sidereal frame.

This page computes both. Your Western sign comes from the tropical frame. Your Surya Rashi comes from the sidereal frame, calculated on the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the reference used across Indian almanacs and the standard for Vedic work. That is why the two results can name different signs from one birth date, and why the Vedic one is usually the earlier sign. Neither frame is a mistake. They measure different things. Most of the confusion about “my two different signs” is just two measuring systems being quoted at each other without either one being named.

Crossing Days: Two Sets, One in Each Zodiac

The Sun does not enter a sign at midnight on a fixed calendar date. It crosses at a particular minute, and that minute shifts from year to year because the solar year runs about 365.25 days rather than a clean 365, with leap years pulling it back. Someone born on 20 March could be a Pisces in one year and an Aries in another.

Because this page reads two zodiacs, there are two sets of crossing days a year and they never coincide. The Western ones cluster near the 20th to the 23rd of each month. The Vedic Sankrantis cluster near the 13th to the 17th. You are never two signs at once in the same frame. The Sun sits in exactly one sign of each zodiac at any given moment. On a day the Sun crossed, or within about a day either side of it, this calculator flags the date rather than choosing for you, because a date without a time cannot settle a crossing that close. Settling it takes your birth time and birthplace, which is what the Birth Chart tool is built for.

Elements: The Four Building Blocks

Every sign belongs to one of four elements. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) run on action, confidence and self-expression. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) run on stability, results and things you can point at. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) run on ideas, conversation and social connection. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) run on intuition, feeling and psychological depth.

The element usually explains a sign's default setting better than the sign name does. Three fire signs go about it in completely different ways, since Aries charges, Leo commands and Sagittarius wanders off to look for something better, but all three share the same fuel: the need to move and be seen moving.

Modalities: How You Handle Change

Each sign also belongs to one of three modalities. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things. They set a direction and take the first step before the path is clear. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold things. They build on what already exists and resist change until the pressure is undeniable. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) shift things. They adapt, translate and bridge the gap between what was and what comes next.

Most of the words people use as insults are modalities described uncharitably. “Stubborn” is usually fixed energy. “Flaky” is usually mutable energy. “Bossy” is usually cardinal. Each has a cost as well as a use, and knowing which one is yours makes the cost easier to work with.

Why Some People Do Not Relate to Their Sun Sign

This is the most common complaint about astrology and the explanations are fairly mechanical. The first is the zodiac mismatch this page fixes: if you grew up in an Indian family and were told one sign, then read Western horoscopes for another, you were being given two frames without either being labelled.

The second is a chart pattern. If several planets in your chart sit in a sign other than your sun sign, a pattern called a stellium, that other sign tends to dominate how you come across day to day. Someone with a Cancer sun but Mercury, Venus and Mars all in Gemini is traditionally read as far more Gemini than Cancer. A strong Moon or rising sign does the same thing. A Leo sun with a Capricorn moon and Virgo rising can come across as reserved and detail-focused, which is nothing like the Leo stereotype. The sun sign is still underneath. It is being filtered through everything else. The next place to look is your Moon Sign and your Rising Sign, which returns the sidereal Vedic ascendant.

The Sun in Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology treats the Sun, Surya, as the naisargika (natural) karaka of the atma: the standing significator of the self and the soul. (This is separate from the Jaimini chara Atmakaraka, which is not a fixed planet at all but whichever planet holds the highest degree in a given chart, and so differs from person to person.) In practice, though, a Vedic reading leads with the Moon sign rather than the Sun for prediction and personality. The solar placement is read mainly for questions about ambition, authority, the relationship with the father, and dealings with government or institutions. That is a different emphasis from Western astrology, where the Sun carries the identity.

Surya is also worshipped directly. The Gayatri Mantra, the most widely recited Vedic hymn, is addressed to the solar principle, and Surya Namaskar is a physical practice built around it. Where a Vedic chart shows the Sun as weak or afflicted, the traditional remedies described in classical texts include wearing a ruby (Manik), reciting the Surya Beej Mantra, offering water to the sun at sunrise and keeping a Sunday fast. These are described here as tradition, not as instructions, and whether any of them apply to a particular chart is a question for a qualified astrologer rather than for a date-of-birth calculator. The Surya Rashi this page computes is the genuine sidereal solar sign a Vedic reading works from, and it is one placement in that reading rather than the whole of it.

What a Daily Sun Sign Reading Is, and What It Is Not

A daily sun sign reading takes one placement, the Sun's sign, and reads the day's planetary movement against it. That is a twelfth of the population sharing a reading, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than dressing it up. What it is good for is a prompt: a nudge to notice where your attention is going today, and a traditional lucky color and number if you enjoy carrying one.

What it is not is a reading of your chart. A personal reading works from your whole chart and from the periods running in it, which needs your birth time and birthplace. If the daily line lands wrong, that is expected. It was written for a sign, not for you. The honest use is light, and the deeper version is the Birth Chart or a conversation with an astrologer.

Your Two Sun Signs, Side by Side

Almost every sun sign calculator gives you one answer and does not mention that a second one exists. This one gives you both, because both are real and they answer different questions.

Your Western sun sign is measured on the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons. Zero degrees of Aries is the spring equinox, wherever the constellation of Aries happens to have drifted to. This is the sign in every newspaper column and the one you tell people at parties.

Your Surya Rashi is measured on the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars themselves. This is the frame Vedic astrology works in, and it is what an astrologer in India is reading when they talk about your Sun. We compute it on the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard reference used across Indian almanacs.

The two frames have drifted about 24 degrees apart over the last two thousand years, because the Earth's axis wobbles slowly. A sign spans 30 degrees. So unless you were born in roughly the last five or six days of a Western sign, your Surya Rashi is the sign before your Western one. A Western Leo born in early August is usually a Karka (Cancer) in the Vedic frame, and it is a Western Leo born on 20 August, near the end of the Western stretch, who lands on Simha (Leo) in both frames. Neither answer is a mistake and neither cancels the other. They are two different measuring systems, and knowing which one someone is using settles most of the arguments people have about having “two different signs”.

One thing worth naming plainly: if a family astrologer asks for your rashi, they usually mean your Moon sign, not your solar one. The Moon sign needs your birth time and birthplace, and the Rashi Calculator is built for it.

Born on a Crossing Day?

The Sun does not switch signs at midnight. It crosses the boundary at a specific minute, and this calculator works from a midday reference for your birth date, so a birthday that lands on the crossing itself cannot be settled from the date alone.

Because the page computes two zodiacs, there are two sets of crossing days and they never fall on the same date. The Western crossings sit near the 20th to the 23rd of each month. The Vedic ones, the Sankrantis, sit near the 13th to the 17th, which is why Makar Sankranti lands on 14 January while the Western Capricorn began around 22 December. Supplying your birth year lets the calculator work out the actual crossing date for that year rather than reading a printed average off a table, and it flags your date when the Sun changed sign on it or within about a day either side, because at that distance a morning birth and an evening birth can sit on opposite sides of the line.

If your birthday is one of those days in either zodiac, or sits right beside one, this calculator says so rather than quietly picking a side. Settling it properly needs your birth time and birthplace, which is what the Birth Chart tool is for.

The dates in this table are the Western (tropical) ranges. The Sanskrit Name column is what the sign is called in Sanskrit, and that name is the same in either zodiac: Mesha means Aries whichever frame you are reading. Which sign you land in is what changes. Your Vedic sun sign is computed separately on the sidereal zodiac and is usually the sign before your Western one. Its date ranges are in the Surya Rashi date table below.

The strengths, challenges and matches listed are the qualities traditionally read for each sign, a description of the sign itself and not a reading of any individual. Best, good and challenging matches are the traditional sun-sign pairings, one layer of compatibility rather than a score for two real charts. Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces carry two Western rulers because modern astrology added the outer planets (Pluto, Uranus, Neptune) while traditional astrology keeps the classical ones (Mars, Saturn, Jupiter).

Each of these entry days is a Sankranti, the moment the Sun moves into a new sidereal sign. Makar Sankranti, on or about 14 January, is the one most widely observed. The entry day shifts by about a day either side depending on the year and the almanac, and the reference point itself drifts by roughly one degree a century, which is why this calculator works out the actual crossing date for your birth year rather than reading it off this table. It gives you that crossing as a date rather than as a time of day, since it reads the Sun's position from a midday reference. Treat the ranges here as the reference picture, and your computed result as the answer.

Read the two date columns as two different questions. The Western column tells you which sign the Sun occupied on the tropical zodiac. The Surya Rashi column tells you which sidereal sign carries the same Sanskrit name, and when the Sun occupies it. Because the two frames sit about 24 degrees apart, a birthday inside a Western range usually falls inside the previous sign's Surya Rashi range, which is exactly why the calculator returns two different sign names for most people. Both sets of dates shift by a day or so from year to year, so the calculator works out the real crossing date for your birth year rather than reading these rows. Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces carry two Western rulers because modern astrology added the outer planets (Pluto, Uranus, Neptune) while traditional astrology keeps the classical ones (Mars, Saturn, Jupiter). The gemstones listed match the ones shown for each sign across this page.

These are the fixed traditional correspondences carried in Western and Vedic astrology, and they belong to the sign permanently. They are a different thing from the lucky color and number in today's reading, which are read from the day and change every morning. Both are offered for reference and reflection. The body-area column is symbolic association from classical texts, not a statement about your health, and nothing here is a substitute for professional medical advice.

Elements and Modalities Matrix

Every sign sits where one element meets one modality. Twelve combinations, no repeats.

FireEarthAirWater
Cardinal (starts)AriesCapricornLibraCancer
Fixed (holds)LeoTaurusAquariusScorpio
Mutable (shifts)SagittariusVirgoGeminiPisces

The element is the fuel. The modality is the driving style. Cardinal Fire (Aries) starts things loudly. Fixed Water (Scorpio) holds emotional intensity without letting go. Mutable Earth (Virgo) keeps adjusting a practical system as conditions change. The pairing tells you more than either axis on its own, which is why two Fire signs can feel nothing alike.

Sun Sign and Moon Sign

Your sun sign is the identity you spend a lifetime growing into. Your moon sign describes how you react before you have decided anything: what settles you, what sets you off. Western astrology leads with the Sun. Vedic astrology leads with the Moon, which is why an Indian astrologer usually asks for your Moon first, and why “rashi” in everyday Indian use means the Moon sign rather than the solar one. This tool gives you the Sun, in both zodiacs. For the other half, use the Moon Sign Calculator, which needs your birth time and place as well.

How This Page Calculates, and What It Is For

How this is calculated

This calculator computes the Sun's position along the ecliptic for your date of birth, working from a midday reference, and reports the sign it falls in under two different frames. The Western answer is read on the tropical zodiac, which measures from the spring equinox. The Vedic answer, your Surya Rashi, is read on the sidereal zodiac, which measures from the fixed stars, using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. The two frames sit about 24 degrees apart, which is why the two answers usually name different signs. The entry and exit dates shown for your birth year are worked out here from that same position reading, by testing the dates around each boundary until the Sun's position crosses it, rather than being read off a printed average or looked up in a fixed table. Because the position is read from a midday reference, that gives a crossing date and not a time of day. On a day the Sun changed sign in either zodiac, or within about a day either side of the change, the calculator flags the date rather than choosing a side, because a date without a birth time cannot settle a crossing that close. It does not compute a moon sign, a rising sign or any other placement, and it does not use your birth time or birthplace.

What the reading is keyed to

The reading shown for the day is calculated for the sign, not for your chart: everyone born under the same sign sees the same reading and the same lucky color and number for that date, and it refreshes daily. Everything in the fixed reference layer, the element, modality, rulers, Sanskrit name, traditional lucky items, strengths, challenges and sign matches, comes from a standing traditional reference for that sign. All of it describes the sign, not you, and none of it is generated from your individual chart.
